If you could change one thing about the touring industry, what would it be?

I'll just get in trouble if I voice my opinions on this topic

Local PA Providers

Hi everyone, I have a question about a situation I got into last year with my band that I do FOH and MON for.

We were playing a small festival in an open air amphitheater for about 5000 people... There's a stage with a wooden plank floor.

When I got on stage, I saw that the local PA guys had created End Fire from the subwoofers on the down stage right. I asked them why they did that, because the tech rider says I don't want subwoofers on stage, and they said they don't want their subwoofers to be dirty... Unfortunately there was no time to make any changes. The sound on stage was absolutely terrible, just low end... I want to ask the system engineers, what do you think about their decision? 😄

And this year we will play the same festival and I'm worried they will do it…

I second what Andy said.

End Fire can be a great option but if your artist doesn't like standing on top of the subs and having the stage rumble like an earthquake then a whole lot of subs directly under the stage is a bad idea.

...but "they don't want their subwoofers to be dirty" comment. SERIOUSLY? They agreed to provide audio for an outdoor music festival. What did they think was going to happen?!?! Ugh...

Tour needs

What unexpected need have you discovered while touring that you now always prepare for, and how did it change your tour experience?

I have a “day off” bag that’s different from my “show day” bag. Allows me to only

Take out a small bag at a time vs having to lug a huge suitcase around. Also the manscaped body scrubber is a game changer. Both those have made a significant difference in my touring experience. :)

1st fly date advice

Hey guys! I

've been doing audio and A/V in a full time professional capacity for just over a year, due to availability constraints I've been sticking with one production company for now, and they asked me to fly across the country for a week for work, basically I'll be shuffling breakout rooms for a probably 10k attendance conference (with alot of live music)

1 guy told me to buy a hammock, 1 guy told me to shadow the SE when he tunes, and I've heard sleep when you can and be available. What advice do you have for me? Buying, practical, or otherwise, I may buy a coffee put when I get out there, and all my kit is on a tractor trailer for the week so I'm feeling kinda naked.

Thanks,

Jesse

I second everything Erik R said. I will add EAT when you can. It is easy to let a whole day go by and not make time to eat. We all know what happens when we are malnourished. I have been known to bring with me on certain gigs "Emergency Steaks" that I grill up at home and just throw in a zip lock baggy. Don't think you are above any task. I work for Clair Global in Nashville. When Matt Clair comes down for a visit/check-in, he is also taking out the trash and filling up the coffee pot. I mix FOH for a big national act, I also pull feeder, fly PA and "kinda help" load trucks on my tour.
