If I may offer some advice, in the nicest way possible? Never offer to work for free. Not only does it lower the bar for others in the industry, making salary negotiations that much more difficult, but it also makes you seem desperate. Always know your worth, and from what I’ve read, you’re definitely worth more than “free”.
As for getting your foot in the door, look into local production companies, local casinos with entertainment divisions, or even your local IATSE. True, it most likely will not be a touring gig, but you’ll be paid well, and gain a ton of useful information that you can put to use when you land your first tour. Good luck to you!
