IMO this has turned into one of the most demanding positions with regard to skill sets required. You'll need to be near expert in everything regarding any system infrastructure and then --- in todays world --- be extremely competent in practical electro-acoustics. I.e. fundamental audio physics, system prediction / control software and audio over IP transport. As you can imagine to do this gig effectively you are ALWAYS going to be chasing technical knowledge and insight. The guys at the top of their game fully understand this AND embrace it. The tipping point comes when you can accumulate wide ranging experiences and combine them with your technical acumen. This of course takes years of time in the field. Today's high-end systems are simply too complex to just take the approach that "I'll figure it all out once they hire me" You gotta bring something of value to the table and constantly be expanding what you know and refining what can you do or you're in for a very long journey.
