What did that path look like for you or someone you know?

My path to becoming an SE was starting at the bottom at 8th day sound at 20yrs old. I mic'd the stage, i tech'd the monitor rig, i flew the PA, then i moved to Crew chief/SE back before Line arrays that didnt mean much, Learning all the gear was crucial as the FOH engineers that spec'd it barely knew how to use it, it was on me to get it to work or find a good Plate reverb preset. Now its more about being a good IT specialist, taking all the PA vendor training, learnig how to accurately shoot and draw a room, never trust a random room drawing you found online, what if the person who drew it was terrible at it. Get good at this and its easy to do fast first thing in the morning. Stay off your phone/social media during the gig day, learn what the FOH engineer likes even if you dont like what they like. listen like they listen. Walk the room during the gig and make sure what you and they decided on is still working with a room full of people.
